Paul Leonard-Morgan - Filmtales (Special Edition)

So I remember sitting there watching films, listening to the soundtracks and thinking, "what a cool job". And listening to my mum's old records and thinking how cool it would be to work with bands. And then the two things just kind of started to happen at the same time. In a little church in Glasgow where all the bands would come out to play and to record. I had started writing some music for films in a studio at the back of Cava Studios. And then the bands next door would ask me to help out on their records. Arranging the string parts, playing keyboards, conducting - that kind of stuff. And as I worked with more bands, the film guys kind of liked it, and I did more soundtracks. And as I did more soundtracks, the bands kind of liked it, so I worked with more bands. And then I decided to write my own album, and I got those bands that liked the films that liked the bands to write some stuff with me. I call it Filmtales, cos I had to call it something and people say it sounds quite cinematic. Personally, I wouldn't read too much into that, though. And that's pretty much how we get to here. Our Broken Garden - When Your Blackening Shows (2008)

We first met Our Broken Garden - Danish singer/songwriter Anna Broensted and cohorts - earlier in the year by way of their Lost Sailor EP, a understated collection of rustic melody and alt.folk made special by the singer's smoky, elfin voice. Drawing heavily on influences such as Mazzy Star and the Cocteau Twins and providing the ideal downtempo foil to Bella Union labelmates Howling Bells, it was a debut that suggested greater things were to follow. 

When Your Blackening Shows was conceived in an abandonded school in the Danish forests and wisely again uses Broensted's almost choral pipes to recreate that poignant sense of solitude and fragility. The problem is that the formula which made their debut a mildly diverting exercise in austerity simply doesn't stretch across a whole album. After The Blinding (Lost Sailor's standout) and the title track have slipped ephemerally by, the whole thing gradually glides to a graceful, but ultimately futile halt. The effect is a little like being smothered, in fact pssst - whisper it quietly unless some tweed-jacketed pseudo is loitering near you - it's actually pretty boring. 

There is proof that even those who resolutely ignore the mainstream will eventually have their day - see The Shins and Modest Mouse - but Broensted will need to explore a far more diverse musical backdrop to find the public adoration her beguiling voice deserves. -Andy Peterson

Nitin Sawhney - London Undersound

get this album..

In an attempt to capture the motions of life since 9/11, Nitin Sawhney is famously uncategorisable as a musician.

It serves him well in his efforts to inhabit the London "undersound" – it's light, broadly mellow, worldy pop music driven by high levels of musicianship and the determination not to alienate. If the album lacks the killer melody it deserves, that doesn't mean you won't find safe places within it to abide. Perhaps within the bosoms of Imogen Heap or Paul McCartney. Or perhaps not.
