Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s psych-pop outfit “poised to break out this year” (Rolling Stone) Black Moth Super Rainbow have a special treat for Record Store Day vinyl aficionados.

On April 18, 2009, Graveface Records will release the ‘Born On A Day’ 7-inch, which comes with two versions of the eerie, swirling psychedelic first single “Born on a Day the Sun Didn’t Rise”‘Eating Us’ (Graveface 5/26) on 7-inch orange/red vinyl in a limited edition of just 500 copies. from their forthcoming album

Side A is the album version, and Side B is a soft, stripped-down version recorded with a banjo and sticky electro beats, showcasing the before and after entailed in recording their first studio album with acclaimed producer Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Weezer) at Tarbox Road Studios. Graveface is also offering “Born On A Day the Sun Didn’t Rise” as an MP3 download for fans to hear the fully fleshed-out BMSR.

Fridmann takes Black Moth Super Rainbow’s adventurous sound to new sonic heights by replacing the spliced electro beats used in their previous recordings with D.Kyler’s booming, hip-hop styled live drums, cranking up the undulating bass guitar to blend seamlessly with the crunchy beats, and making frontman Tobacco’s vocoder lush and up front, creating a creepy and angelic sound that bridges human voice and machine. Fridmann keeps the candy-coated sticky textures created with vintage synths, guitars and freaked-out analog effects for which the group has become known and loved.

‘Eating Us’ follows the critically praised 2007 ‘Dandelion Gum’ (Graveface). The group Blender described as “the missing link between Daft Punk’s cosmic kitsch and the wistful bliss of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever” is poised to make a major impression on new fans in 2009.

Graveface Records has set up a reserve list on their website where fans can sign up to ensure they receive the full deluxe CD of ‘Eating Us,’ featuring a 16-page art booklet and hairy summer jewel case jacket limited to 2,000 copies.

Mercury Rev - Strange Attractor

I'll call it like I see it, Strange Attractor is not the greatest piece of work in the Mercury Rev catalogue.  But nobody expected it to be.
Strange Attractor is the free instrumental album and companion piece to the proper record Snowflake Midnight.  
On the album, the Buffalo band renowned for the sweeping cinematic feel of their records, branches out a bit to delve into electronic aspects we aren't used to hearing from them.  After a couple of so-so studio albums, the attempt at something new is welcome; even if it's not always successful.

Many of the songs do end up blending into one another.  However, like much of the Mercury Rev oeuvre, it is perfect for a stormy candlelit evening...www.snobsmusic.net

The Octopus Project and Black Moth Super Rainbow - The House of Apples and Eyeballs

"The House of Apples & Eyeballs" is not a split, but a year-long, full-length collaboration by both bands. The Octopus Project is known and loved for their uncategorizable broken-guitars-meet-samplers-meet-drums-meet-drum machines sound, while the musical island of Black Moth Super Rainbow would rather play their songs in the woods and not let you know if their gear is broken or working just fine. 

Holding hands from Austin to Pittsburgh, they set out to create one of the wilder pop records of the year. 

For anyone familiar with both bands, may you find yourself at peace with this dream record. But know that not all is as it seems, and the challenge of figuring out which band played which parts may sometimes be impossible. While a couple tracks did make it to the record in their original, one-band form, most were passed back and forth for several rounds of dismemberment, rearrangement, and augmentation. The result overflows with sonic treats: cut-up beats and vocoder melodies collide with huge, distorted riffs. Naked on the Vague - The Blood Pressure Sessions (2008)

Originally released in 2007 on CD by the fearless Australian Dual Plover label, The Blood Pressure Sessions ventures into a darker realm than their debut 7-inch (also on Dual Plover) had erroneously suggested. Propelled by the sharp, rhythmic snare drum beat and anchored by thunderous, fuzzed bass-lines and stinging, swinging organ and synth fills, Phelan and Hopkins take turns rounding out the vocal duties, giving the whole of their sound a sonorous curtain of ecstatic foreboding. Chroma Key - You Go Now

Chroma Key is basically a solo project of Kevin Moore, best known to proggers as the original keyboard player with prog-metal pioneers Dream Theater. However, anyone getting a hold of You Go Now expecting a heaping helping of anything like Dream Theater will be sorely disappointed. Instead of an over the top chopfest, Chroma Key produces a far more subtle slice of mostly electronic music.

To be honest, the closet comparison that I can come up with is some of Radiohead's more ambient material on Kid A . Most tracks consist of a base of synths and other electronics with sparse vocals, samples and guitars over top. The vibe produced by the music on the album is one of detachment and solitude. Moore's vocals, which sometimes border on a monotone, add to that feeling. The samples are well used and diverse, from transmissions for the Apollo 11 mission ("Lunar", obviously) to part of a tape of a man pontificating on the philosophical ramifications of driving ("When You Drive", also obviously). By the time we get to "Astronaut Down", the strongest track on the album, the presence of an actual groove makes it seem much more up-beat than it really is.

One value of You Go Now is its brevity. At not even forty minutes long, it comes to an end just about when you're ready for it to. Moore deserves kudos for doing something so completely different, even if it leaves you less than satisfied in the end. For those who enjoy things a little more loose and spacey than intricate and complex, You Go Now is definitely a release to check out. -Jon Byrne

Howlin Rain - Howlin Rain (2006)

Before the skinny ties and retro-chic drainpipes there was dust-filled denim and broken boots. Before the carefully-waxed hair and poncey vocals there were eight-dollar shag-cuts and whiskey-soaked voices. The best rock came from America and was played by bands with names like Credence Clearwater Revival, The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, The Band. Artists like these have never been forgotten, but seem somewhat neglected in today’s retro-centric rock, probably because these artists perfected the genres of Southern Rock and California Soul and no one has since been worthy enough to take the helm; until Howlin’ Rain, a collaboration between guitarist Ethan Miller from Comets on Fire and drummer John Moloney of Sunburned Hand of Man. With a wah-wah pedal and banjo-player Ian Gradek as the extent of their effects, Howlin’ Rain produce a rough, honest sound that’s equal parts jam, blues, country and a hint of noise. The haunting and nostalgic “Calling Lightning With a Scythe? features a raucous barroom chorus led by Miller’s world-weary voice and a minute or so of running the mic along the guitar strings.
