Post-punk troublemakers Art Brut are coming back 'atcha with an all new LP (their third) sporting the glorious moniker of "Art Brut VS. Satan"--which can't possibly end up being as awesome as that title. The band seems confident, though. Frontman Eddie Argos assures that their "punk as funk" recording time of two weeks with the legendary Frank Black will work to Art Brut's advantage in the long run. "Art Brut vs. Satan" is scheduled for an April 20th release, with first single "Alcoholics Unanimous" due out April 6th.

Pete Doherty, most notably known as a heroin junkie, then as the singer of Babyshambles and the Libertines, apparently has been working on a solo album slated for release on March 24 via Astralwerks. The album is calledGrace/Wasteland and the NME has gotten a listen, calling it "the most diverse album Pete has made by a long stretch." Considering his four albums have jocked the Clash and the Strokes unrepentedly, that can't be too hard, I imagine. Doherty was joined in the production of the album by the guitar work of Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, and the album was produced by Stephen Street, who produced Blur'sParklife, among other albums. There will be a single, called "Last Of The English Roses," out on March 2 in advance of the album, and the NME says it sounds like Gorillaz (yes!!!????).

New Rhodes - Everybody Loves A Scene (2009)

New Rhodes are the kind of indie band that everybody loves; edgy and unique, donning that pleasant '80s spin. So why is this fashionable foursome more established in Japan than in the UK? The answer is unclear, but after their new release, the Brits should soon catch on.

Circulating material yet still remaining unsigned, 'Everybody Loves a Scene' is the new single from the forthcoming album of the same name. Catchy and full of flavour, the New Rhodes have certainly hit the mark when it comes to a light-hearted tune. 

Demonstrating an encouraging introduction through riffs that are strong enough to capture attention, the song really kicks in when drums and vocals are entered into the mixture. Fully alert and raring to go, the song provides the listener with one epic verse and chorus combination that you can't help but sing and dance to. Affix a Bruce Springsteen-esque underlay and the single is complete.

Lyrically, the Bristolian band unleash a slight cheese-factor where they tell a tale of knowing what’s at stake, but needing nothing else - even if everybody else does love a scene. How very charming, lads. Admittedly, overly complicated is not necessary when the music is this effervescent. 

It can be hard to stamp your mark on the indie/rock genre, but these guys have managed with ease. This is definitely worth a repeat listen - they have far too much depth to be branded 'just another'. -dailymusicguide.com

Lake - Oh, The Places We'll Go (2008)

It should come as no surprise that, after three years of play, many, many full-length albums (12 to be exact), and several changes to its lineup, Olympia, Washington’s Lake are signed to local indie label K Records. K is known as one of the forebears of the DIY twee-pop movement in the United States, and Lake fit into the lineup perfectly; their light, happy-go-lucky, bouncy music is a nearly spot-on cross between a sedated version of The Blow and Kimya Dawson.

My first thought after slipping the album into my car stereo? That I had heard it before; I was sure I had heard it before… but of course I hadn’t. It’s just that the members of Lake do nothing original on Oh, The Places We’ll Go. Yes, twee music isn’t exactly revolutionary in and of itself; we’re talking about a genre that includes Dawson, who recently released a kids’ album that prominently featured the words “poop” and “pee”. However, it’s hard to get excited about a band that sounds like a poor man’s version of Atlanta, GA’s Telenovela, a less exciting and cheery I’m From Barcelona, and a less talented Belle and Sebastian. Dueling male and female vocalists? Check. Affected, precious, cutesy lyrics? Check.

But after all is said and done, twee music can and should be taken for what it is: wistful pop music. Yes, Lake haven’t broken new ground with their first K Records release. Yes, they won’t be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But, so what? Oh, The Places We’ll Go is completely listenable, wholly enjoyable twee, straight out of the heart of the indie-pop-loving Northwest. -Tinymixetapes.com

Jukebox the Ghost - Let Live & Let Ghosts

Seth Timbs and his mates in Fluid Ounces better check their playbooks, because Washington D.C. trio Jukebox the Ghost lifted entire chapters of it for their debut Let Live and Let Ghosts. “Where Are All the Scientists Now?” in particular feels like Fluid Ounces’ In the New Old Fashioned Way album rolled into one song which, for the uninitiated, is a very, very good thing. Granted, the explosive piano work by singer Ben Thornewill is sure to draw more comparisons to Ben Folds than Timbs, but the sad truth is that Folds hasn’t made a record this effervescent in over a decade. Jukebox the Ghost takes the three-man approach of Ben Folds Five, replaces the bass with a guitar, and creates music that merges Queen’s bombastic spirit with the minimalist approach of the White Stripes. Prog rock for sissies, if you will. It’s quirky and undeniably fun, but a few more hooks would take this material a long way. Love the attitude and approach, though. (The Rebel Group 2008)

The Von Bondies - Love , Hate And Then There's You

In the five-plus years since the recording of their second album, Pawn Shoppe Heart, the Von Bondies have replaced two key members, lost their deal with Warner Bros., and seen frontman Jason Stollsteimer beaten to a pulp publicly by scene rival Jack White. By all rights, they should be packing it in, so their third album's vitality is a welcome shock. Over punchy, driving riffs and crackling drum work, Stollsteimer howls like a guy with much to be pissed about, while the sharp production and dark pop hooks offer a vision of garage rock that's more grand than grimy. -David Peisner

White Denim - Exposion (2008)

Jam-band virtuosos with an unlikely knack for concise songs, Austin, Texas' White Denim make post-rock that actually rocks. Favoring a bright, treble-heavy guitar attack, the group skew their arrangements in ways that feel more canny than contrived. Fist-pumper "Don't Look That Way at It" threads an accelerated, heavily processed riff through stutter-stepping percussion and a teenage-wasteland chorus, while "You Can't Say" distills melt-with-you chord changes down to a heartbreaking, elemental riff.
