This Town Needs Guns - Animals

Taking cues from American post-punk "greats" such as Owls or Cap'n Jazz (or anything the Kinsella boys touch, really) hasn't necessarily been a recipe for mainstream success. Cult followings are all rage now, anyway. This Town Needs Guns, who are indeed a reflection of their entirely erudite stomping grounds in Oxford, England, are a remarkably proficient bunch of technically inclined guitar "wunderkinds," if I may. The band has already released a sizable collection of EPs and singles courtesy of the indie Big Scary Monsters (which, at my behest - please take the time to check out the rest of the label's roster), and will continue the charge into the states with their debut full length "Animals" due to be released via new LA label Sargent House. While those in the states will have to wait while Sargent gets things sorted, those is the UK will find it easy to get their hands on. They're an absolute favorite of mine...certainly you can all share in my exuberance?! -Lizzy

Mr. Chop - Sounds From The Cave (2008)

The press release for Mr. Chop's "Sounds from the Cave" promises a "fantastic planet of electic sounds". It doesn’t happen very often, but in this instance the press release is spot-on. It’s down-tempo heaven, with hip-hop, jazz funk, electronica and more retro references than a Mike Myers movie. "Sounds from the Cave" is short and sweet. As an EP goes, it is small but perfectly formed.

Dim Dim - Whip (2008)

Ten years Dim Dim tried to get the wise fruitcake world party started yet something must have denied him reaching that unique goal. It must be one of the world's greatest mysteries. His combination of juicy jigs and an unbiased sense of exploration perhaps does not comply with the cynical adult world. Dim Dim originates from Brussels, lived with his family in Paris and, settled in Portugal now, has a sixth album on sale which, after four fruit inspired titles and one entitled 'Bounce', is called 'Whip'. How very true, it brings lashings of fun.

Belgium is at the crossroads of many cultures, so we hear touches of central-African guitar licks melting seamlessly with cartoon film sound snippets popping up as if we were hopping between stands at a global music market square. But
Dim Dim's music owes a debt to surrealism as well. All is carefully crafted with the sole aim to please body and mind.

'
Whip' is one step further on from the 'Bounce' album. Dim Dim now goes Brazil. Not much of a surprise there, given Dim Dim's Portugal residency. Another charming new move is the ska song towards the end of this deliciously innocent and inspired mish mash. Dim Dim's world is a wonderland, where teletubbies mature their carefree behaviour with the aid of electronic music. Bubbling, not jumpy, sounds will uplift even the grumpiest soul. -Maarten Schiethart

Paul Leonard-Morgan - Filmtales (Special Edition)

So I remember sitting there watching films, listening to the soundtracks and thinking, "what a cool job". And listening to my mum's old records and thinking how cool it would be to work with bands. And then the two things just kind of started to happen at the same time. In a little church in Glasgow where all the bands would come out to play and to record. I had started writing some music for films in a studio at the back of Cava Studios. And then the bands next door would ask me to help out on their records. Arranging the string parts, playing keyboards, conducting - that kind of stuff. And as I worked with more bands, the film guys kind of liked it, and I did more soundtracks. And as I did more soundtracks, the bands kind of liked it, so I worked with more bands. And then I decided to write my own album, and I got those bands that liked the films that liked the bands to write some stuff with me. I call it Filmtales, cos I had to call it something and people say it sounds quite cinematic. Personally, I wouldn't read too much into that, though. And that's pretty much how we get to here. The special edition of my album's just been released, and I'm still sitting here thinking "what a cool job".... -Myspace

The Von Bondies - Love , Hate And Then There's You

In the five-plus years since the recording of their second album, Pawn Shoppe Heart, the Von Bondies have replaced two key members, lost their deal with Warner Bros., and seen frontman Jason Stollsteimer beaten to a pulp publicly by scene rival Jack White. By all rights, they should be packing it in, so their third album's vitality is a welcome shock. Over punchy, driving riffs and crackling drum work, Stollsteimer howls like a guy with much to be pissed about, while the sharp production and dark pop hooks offer a vision of garage rock that's more grand than grimy. -David Peisner

Joakim - My Best Remixes

After 3 albums, the French UFO still manages to avoid all sorts of classifications, being a musician, producer, DJ and live performer at the same time. Since 2003 he's also become one of the most demanded remixers out there being regularly charted by tastemakers like Erol AlkanSimian Mobile Disco or Ivan SmaggheJoakim tackles each song like he's never done a remix before, trying to find a different angle every time while keeping an eye on the dancefloor - the main target.

That's what is called Haute-Couture dance music (vs Ready to Wear) and that's why people ask for his tailored-made remixes. That's also: after Tiga listened to Lionel Hampton's 'Vibromatic' remix which was one of 2003 club hits, he asked Joakim for a remix of his own 'Pleasure From The Bass'. A few years later there was Antena's 'Camino Del Sol', a crossover dance classic, played by classic house and techno DJs as well as minimal heads, indie dance DJs and even mainstream superstars like John Digweed. Since then, most of Joakim's remixes became club anthems, from the epic italo remix of Cut Copy's 'Hearts on Fire' to the banging take on Alter Ego's 'Why Not?'.

It was actually not easy to choose between all the remixes Joakim's done between 2002 and 2008. Some of you will regret the absence of Gucci SoundsystemSimian Mobile DiscoAirFisherspooner etc. It’s selection of remixes that would turn a simple compilation into an album that you can listen at home if not in a club. -Clubevents.com

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

Epic post-rock tinged emotional indie stalwarts Elbow release their fourth album 'The Seldom Seen Kid', another staunch and anthemic collection of songs. The tense and emotional sound of previous records remains, but with a distinctly more commercial riff-based template, particularly on lead single 'Grounds For Divorce'. The band produced the record themselves, as with previous records, lending it a homespun quality that would be out of synch with any external influence. Revered by their peers as a reliably independent act, Elbow have created a subtly innovative extension of their sound and scope with 'The Seldom Seen Kid'. -Play

One of the latest "true queer art punks" to emerge from the cracked pavement of southern suburban sprawl, Atlas Sound is the solo moniker of Deerhunter frontman / provocateur Bradford Cox. Here on his debut album, Cox / Sound moves out of dank nightclubs filled with eternal existential drone punk, and relaxes at home in his Grant Park, Atlanta bedroom. And this is, essentially, a bedroom album, a collage, mixing the garage rock and ambient electronic influences previously explored with Deerhunter in a new context, with newly explored recording techniques, mainly laptop-based, learned with guidance from kranky artist Nudge's Brian Foote. The result is 14 Songs of melancholy and mania.

This is a true solo album, entirely created and produced by a single person. That is certainly not unique, especially in the contemporary scene. But Bradford Cox's unusual talent is the ability to take a wide variety of seemingly incongruous sound elements, and seamlessly meld them into a cohesive pop narrative. A sunken 4/4 techno beat underpinning "Winter Vacation"? Perfect. Mbira loops running over the top of "Quarantined"? Just what it needed. An insistent, clipped drum roll carrying "River Card"? Masterful. And ultimately it is this innate ability to combine all these disparate elements into a singular whole that makes this album such an enjoyable, and unique listen.

"This album is for my best friend Lockett. It has a lot to do with childhood. I wanted to make an album that was uplifting but honest, which is why it seems sad a lot of the time. I want to make music that could be 'healing' or therapeutic to people who relate to it." Bradford Cox, Oct 20, 2007, Harlem, New York

"A largely ambient meditation on romantic obsession full of densely layered electronics and guitars that sound as if they were beamed in from some haunted parallel universe." The Fader

Naked on the Vague - The Blood Pressure Sessions (2008)

Originally released in 2007 on CD by the fearless Australian Dual Plover label, The Blood Pressure Sessions ventures into a darker realm than their debut 7-inch (also on Dual Plover) had erroneously suggested. Propelled by the sharp, rhythmic snare drum beat and anchored by thunderous, fuzzed bass-lines and stinging, swinging organ and synth fills, Phelan and Hopkins take turns rounding out the vocal duties, giving the whole of their sound a sonorous curtain of ecstatic foreboding. Betraying a gallows wit, the band refers to their music as "apocalyptic pop," which could be construed as both drowning and waving. -Insound

Asobi Seksu - Citrus

This New York City band's second album cements the appeal that put them near the top of the neo-shoegaze heap. The secret is that Asobi Seksu's generous use of effects (reverb, wah, delay, feedback) is not a typical masking device, but rather a complement to great pop craftsmanship and chops. They're not just one of those loud bands that sound cool despite being melody-challenged. Hook-laden high points like "Thursday" and the almost overwhelming "Red Sea" best demonstrate Asobi Seksu's firm grasp of their chosen style. And Yuki Chikudate (who sings in both Japanese and English) is served well by a dense mix that pushes her vocals back into the sonic thick of it. -newburycomics

Soldout - Cuts (2008)

Yet another of those bands that are so brilliant I sort of feel like I should have known about them ages ago. I need to fire some of my staff. I can get my own damn cookies. Soldout are Cassandra and David, a couple of tremendously nice-looking Belgians who have just released their sophomore album, Cuts, on Anorak Supersport. I have listened to Cuts an embarrassing number of times already because I’m a little bit in love with everything about it. It’s the combination of two distinct personalities within their sassy synth-pop aesthetic – the gorgeously dark with a hint of psychaedelia, and the twitchy CSS-like dance-inducer – that make this album a total keeper (I need a new harddrive). -Bec

Lykke Li - Youth Novels

Excluding the kind of ambition and open defiance of convention that could only come from an artist just barely out of her teens, Youth Novels, while not without its share of bumps, is an extraordinary first album. With famed Swedish pop producer Lasse Marten assisting (the guy behind Kelly Clarkson's ingenious mainstream-to-indie poptimist crossover smash 'Since U Been Gone'), Lykke Li and Yttling have created a surprisingly stark-sounding album, an enticing blend of Robyn's unpretentious dance-pop and El Perro del Mar's introspection and tenderness. For a record whose thematic center is the hormonally-enhanced, bipolar passion of one's teenage years, it's remarkably mature-sounding. -popmatters

Errors - It's Not Something But It Is Like Whatever

Produced and recorded by guys from Mogwai at their own studio, Errors share some tricks with the biggest Glasgow post-rockers. Errors' sound is intense and eventful, the kind of sound that does not need human voice (they experimented with adding it by the end of the album, though). Rhythmical and slightly gloomy, this kind of music goes well with purposeless night walks. Generally, I find this debut highly pleasing, though it's not too hard to lose attention somewhere in the middle of this clicking electronic soundscape. -Katz
